Steam Clock

State Museum, Indiana

Inspired by the Gastown Steam Clock in Vancouver, Indiana philanthropists Bill and Nancy Hunt commissioned Landmark Clocks to design a unique steam clock for the new $58 million Indiana State Museum.

The 'Art Deco' design of the steam clock is 18 feet high and 32" square. The case is made of stainless steel with brass trim. Four tinted glass viewing panels allow visitors to see the inner workings of the clock. There are four 24" diameter stylised Arabic dials that are back-lit by neon.

The clock chimes on eight brass steam whistles and plays 'Back home again in Indiana every 15 minutes. The steam emitted from the whistles and the swinging pendulum seem to hold the crowd, as does anticipation of the chimes. The gleaming polished brass gears of the mechanism with a 16" rotating globe on top are visually interesting to watch. A single weight, moving down past the swinging pendulum once a day is easy for visitors to comprehend how the clock mechanism is powered.

This massive tripping mechanism triggers the steam whistles.

This gearing mechanism rotates and tilts the globe to reflect daily and seasonal changes.
