Heritage Clock Restoration

Sinclair Centre, Vancouver, BC

Landmark Clocks was commissioned by Public Works Canada to restore the Vancouver Post Office tower clock in 1985.  The building was renamed the Sinclair Centre and has become an architectural treasure in the city's downtown core.

The historic Atrium clock mechanism was built in 1909 by John Smith & Sons, Derby, England and is the largest clock movement is Western Canada. Prior to it's restoration and relocation, this mechanism operated the four, 12-foot diameter clocks in the Vancouver Post Office tower for 76 years.

New stained glass was carefully fitted to the clock's restored cast iron dials. A modern electric clock mechanism was installed to drive the old dial gear works and hands.

This mechanism was well preserved having been 'over-oiled' for many years, thus preserving all the parts under layers of dried grease and oil. I enjoyed the challenge of restoring this impressive mechanism and bell as well as an automatic winding system so it could be displayed as an operating attraction for the newly created Atrium.
