Lunar Clock

Bridgepoint Public Market, Richmond, BC

Measuring 65ft high, this is the world's largest lunar clock. Designed and built by Ray Saunders of LCI, it was completed in 1989 as a centrepiece for the then new Bridgepoint Public Market* in Richmond, BC. The massive 43 foot long pendulum moves huge gears which rotate the moon dial once every 59 days. The hand points to the lunar day while the revolving disc displays the phase of the moon.

This clock, completed in 1988, stands 150 feet tall. Its four red dials, 11 feet in diameter, have black tapered hands driven by a central, synchronous electric motor. A Mass/Rowe® digital Cronobell Carillon plays the Westminster chimes each quarter hour.

* Regrettably the Bridgepoint market closed its doors in 1990 and the Lunar Clock went into storage where it remains, waiting for a new home.
